How does one describe this book? By 21st Century standards a bit offensive in terminology and stereotypes. That said it is very tongue in cheek and funny for those who are willing to transport themselves back to the early 1960's and allow themselves to read it as if they lived then. It helps if you know a bit about San Francisco history and the characters who have made it colorful in the past. If you do you might pick out some characters who are based on real life human beings at least superficially but not close enough to get anyone sued.I enjoyed it and although I did occasionally cringe over some of the over the top "detective" lingo [a la Marlowe] and blatant slurs, it was a fun read. The "gay" detective is not taking any crap from anyone and forces people to respect him. But if you are looking for an enlightened read, this is not it. But if you enjoyed such dated dime store detective novels as "The Big Sleep" or Maltese Falcon", here is the same language and character development. This book will never be made into a ageless movie but it is a fin way to spend an afternoon if you so desire.
If you are easily offended by language that was used in a bygone (homophobic) era, DO NOT read this book. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a fun story, then this book will be for you. One thing to keep in mind, this book was written in 1961, the vernacular of the time is VERY different from what we use today (2018), but with the dictionary built-in to Kindle (apps and devices) you can get through the book. LOL For the most part, if you are an avid reader then you will catch the gist of things without looking up too many of the very rarely used words. All in all this was a fun read!
It's rare to find gay themed books with the hip lingo of the time, calling the older gay men aunties and the boys all swishing and calling everyone dearie ("the Queen's Vernacular"). Post-Stonewall this kind of effeminate homosexual was seen as stereotypical and derogatory but I think quite often they were just having fun. And it is fun to hear them crack the quips in this light pulp story. This to me is what The Man From C.A.M.P. should have been. A lisping private eye blows into town, hires a hunky side-kick and the two go all over gay L.A. trying to solve a crime. Similar to many books of the period, this book offers a guided tour hidden in the story, advising what to expect at a gay bar and at the baths, how to get a room, where to put your key, how to get "special massages" and more.Lou Rand was obviously flaming and happy with it. He wrote this and one other book, The Gay Cookbook, also filled with camp and innuendos.I enjoyed this story very much, by giving the tour to the sixties audience of what to expect in a gay bar, the author also reveals what such clubs were like at the time to us. It's a funny book with a great picture of gay life at the time and more sex and sin than was customary for books written in 1961.It's a detective themed story and my complaint would be the characters seemed one dimensional. For example I didn't really get a sense of what the main character looked like. Was he an attractive hunk, being asked to pose nude in one scene, or a gumshoe, as the book cover suggests, with a bottle of hooch in his drawer? Also I feel the hero looked down on the other gays, using them for his own devices and even shutting down the gay clubs at the end without a thought to his community. But these are relatively minor complaints.I'd love to read more by Rand or know more about him, apparently though he died at sea without a will.
I rated this five stars for the simple who done it plot said in an early gay voice. Interesting how the story evokes the early gay lingo and illustrates the perception of gay culture from the straight point of view. A fun quick read.
Dated, but interestingly so, while still a thoroughly enjoyable romp. The two main characters were very appealing and I'm sorry this isn't the first of a series as I'd like to revisit these characters.
Nice work at the beginning of the genre. Implies, if it doesn't actually show, attitudes toward gays at the time. The gay detective doesn't get laid, which is sad, but he does challenge the other characters' expectations. Worth the read.
Ok really outdated by todays standards.
