Alexander MacLaren is an amazing Bible preacher from the early 1900's whose deep and moving sermons are still so relevant today. If you are looking for a detailed technical reference that discusses every word of every verse, this is not it - there are plenty of those available. But if you are looking to learn from someone who spent hours and hours daily for year after year in devotion and inductive Bible study on much of the Bible, and whom I believe was blessed by God because of this to have incredibly deep insights into the meaning, organization and application of the scriptures, then you have found what you are looking for.I have not found an author like him that consistently makes even the most seemingly banal OT scriptures relevant to my life and to society today. Yes, I wish he had preached a sermon on every passage in the Bible. But I am very grateful that he did as many as he did!
Anything written by Alexander McLaren is a gem. They don't make men like him anymore especially when the books by current Christians are so pithy. 1500 sermons and thousands of Bible verses went into this book. He even expounded on some of the more obscure verses in the Bible and is unapologetic while being an apologist. I like to say I come away with new insights but these are old insights because it was written before my time. One can feel the passion of this man for the word of God, it is palpable. I think the Kindle price was 0.99 cents and it is a steal. I can only say one thing, if you are a committed Christian, you must read anything and everything by Alexander McLaren. It will make your faith stronger.
This man knew more about the real meaning of Faith in God and how to get that meaning across by clear expository writing than any other Christian commentary available today. Just straight up Bible knowledge without reference to any denominational cliches. Easy to read, logical to follow and clear to understand. Take it one day at a time, go slowly and meditatively. You can't find anything better for the foundational truths of the Bible than Alexander MacLaren's commentary. Of course, straight out reading of the scriptures everyday is necessary as well. All commentary needs to be corroborated by the Bible itself.
This is a wonderful book of expositions of selected verses and passages. It is not a commentary. Some of the negative reviewers seem to have expected a verse-by-verse commentary on the whole Bible. This is a valuable in-depth treatment of hundreds of the most important texts of the Bible. Some of the passages are treated more than once. It is certainly worth the money. For such a huge work, it is easy to navigate.
Scholar with a heart, erudition with depth as well as soul. For my money better than Matthew Henry (who didn't live to do the N.T.) or Pulpit Commentary, or Faussett, Brown et al. Especially at the kindle price, and this is not one of those poorly executed classics you will find here with half the letters replaced with uninteligible symbols and no table of contents, its not one of those.
Use the commentaries as a supplement when reading my Bible. Great explanations of most but not all verses of scripture. Wonderful insight and thought provoking for those of us who want deeper understanding of the scriptures. Probably one of the best investments to enhance my spiritual life.
Old-school, but absolutely beautifully vivid commentary on scriptures. Never fails to give me new perspectives to consider when meditating on scripture. Along with Gill's Expositions, they have completely elevated and enhanced my personal Bible study.
This review must of necessity be based on an incomplete reading of this huge book. It is not a commentary in the usual sense of the word. Rather it is a collection of sermons on texts arranged by chapters and verses. I find MacLaren's sermons thought provoking and helpful. It is not what I expected, but well worth my time.I write and think as a layman regarding this book
