I can sadly not recommend this book at all. It's merely hot air and fluff, devoid of any information. Effectively, the book simply tells you that problems can be complex and that it helps to thoroughly understand the problem before trying to find a solution. You probably know that already and the book gives you nothing at all that would help you to practically become better at problem solving. System Thinking according to the book is trivially stating that there can be multiple actors, multiple connections, mutliple causes etc. etc. making something a system and that one shouldn't oversimplify a problem by not seeing the system aspect. The book is a waste of two hours of your life and a few dollars of your money. It's exemplary for the ever-increasing self-published category, written by self-declared experts on anything that clog your amazon search results and that sorely lack any kind of editorial quality control.
This is a good introduction to systems thinking. Consider it a high level overview. However, the author does provide specific references to resources for those who want to learn more on the topic. The book has an emphasis on education based on the experiences of the author as a teacher. In fact, one could readily see this being a thesis written for an M.A.Ed. degree and subsequently re-purposed as a book. That's not bad, just a note on the writing style. And it's a positive for someone reading it that works in public or private education. The only issue I have with the book (and subtracting one star for it) is that the author's biases with respect to politics and education do seep into the book. Yes, we're all biased as humans. However, in this case it did detract from the points the author was trying to make about systems thinking. For example, the author equates cuts in educational funding to changing the primary purpose of schools as a place to learn. Yet there are plenty of studies out there that show there is very little correlation between the amount spent per capita on students and their academic performance. Clearly, there is something else at play in educational systems affecting performance that isn't triggered by the amount of money spent. As the son of a former school principal, I appreciate what the author has done here and hope that he continues on with research and writing. From what I've seen in this book, he seems to be one of those teachers who makes a difference. So, I do recommend the book for what it is...a great introduction to the topic.
I was really looking forward to this book, but was disappointed. Very brief and short. Took around 2-3 hours of reading time and font and spacing was used to make it look longer than it really was.... felt like an elongated essay I could find on a blog. Although this was an introduction I felt like the way it discussed applications to be very broad. Would have much appreciated the way to map a system instead. Going to charity now.
This book is a gives a helpful introduction to the framework & principles of systems thinking. The author uses easy to understand language and examples throughout the book.If you're looking for an introductory book to systems thinking, I strongly recommend this one.I appreciated the author's application of systems thinking in the different facets of life, in particular to relationships. For those interested in an in-depth look at systems thinking, the author provides an extensive list of references to explore. The citations are well done, making it easy to locate which resources to utilize for further exploration.
Poor writing. No actionable insights. Lots of quotes from other authors and definitions from Merriam Webster dictionary... I mean really? The details were very confusing. The attempt to connect systems thinking to relationships and why rich people stay rich is terrible. The Author could not even offer a definitive definition of systems thinking and its components. This definitely isn't worth the money.
A great introduction to systems thinking without technical details. For a more technical introduction see Donella Meadows Systems Thinking a Primer.
The book provides a light touch to system thinking. There were a few good insights in there for me, but I felt this book could have been written in 10 pages and still had the same amount of takeaway material. With a title like "the art of...", I was hoping for more art.
Starts off okay introducing some of the key concepts of systems thinking. But overall it’s a pretty shallow book. It doesn’t really teach you much how to think in terms of systems, and the examples it provides are very poor. I’d go looking for a different book if you want to learn about systems thinking.
