The author might have a point with some of the issues he brings up, but it's hard to know for sure since there are so many references made to Buttigieg's autobiography that are taken completely out of context. For example, Jones claims that Buttigieg said he was "a victim of racism" when he never made such a statement. Instead, he mentioned not realizing until later in life that some parents weren't comfortable with their children visiting his childhood neighborhood because he lived "in the city." Buttigieg further stated that "if there was a racial layer to that phrase, I was too young to catch it." In other words, Buttigieg is clearly saying that he knows now that some people may have allowed racism (against POC) to believe that his neighborhood wasn't safe. When such a spurious argument is made within the first few pages of a book, it seriously weakens the author's position and brings their credibility into question. This gets even worse when Jones uses anecdotal "evidence" about a third-hand encounter with Buttigieg's father as a way to try to knock Pete Buttigieg. The entire purpose behind this book (which is little more than an angry tirade) is made clear when Jones bemoans the fact that his son, Adam Jones, isn't mentioned in Buttigieg's memoir. Adam Jones grew up three doors from Buttigieg and attended Harvard 10 years earlier than Mayor Pete. Somehow, this was supposed to be important enough to rate a mention in Buttigieg's book, despite Jones acknowledging the age difference between the two men and the fact that the families never associated with each other.Even worse is Jones' claim that Buttigieg tells certain stories to "endear him to the maligned and disaffected ethnics who were too stupid or too poor to move to the suburbs." Yes, the author actually calls some of his fellow South Bend residents "too stupid."Besides these complaints, the writing isn't terrible, although it is condescending and filled with phrases such as "whatever." Jones also used huge paragraphs throughout that don't make for a pleasant Kindle reading experience. All in all, if you're looking for a book that will teach you about Buttigieg (or one that contains real dirt about Buttigieg), this isn't it.On a side note, the author’s other works and book descriptions provide a disturbing look at his thought process. In one book description, he argues that “a Christian must be anti-Jewish.†If I had noticed that before reading Home Alone, I would have known exactly what to expect. This type of hateful commentary has no place in today’s world.
As always Jones writes with clarity, humor, and insight here dealing with the mayor of his town. Pete wants to be the first gay president - but not if America can stop him first. I always look forward to reading Jones' newest material and here he does not disappoint (but he never does!). Thank you to E Michael Jones for taking the time out of your life to write about these unpleasant and difficult subjects.
Buttigieg has a lot going for him and is a smart, articulate, thoughtful man whom I think will be a uniter in our fractured country. It's too bad the author of this book is so filled with bile. His antisemitic, homophobic points of view only serve to amplify his anger. Is he jealous? Vitriolic? Although it's good to get to know candidates for public office well, and of course no candidate is completely perfect, this is not the book for getting good, balanced information. If you're in the mood for a bigoted rant, go ahead. Otherwise this is not for thoughtful people who want to make well informed decisions at the ballot box. This author should take his opinion to the ballot box too rather than engaging in ad hominem attacks.
A quick wikipedia/youtube search of the author is revealing. Notre Dame chose not to renew his tenure track contract after his first year due to repeated issues with his extremist views. He has been condemned by the Catholic League as well. Extreme homophobe as well, based on stomaching my way through a youtube vid.
While the writer is clearly articulate in his delivery, the tone seems fueled by the author's anger for Pete Buttigieg's quick climb as a potential presidential candidate. What an angry neighbor says should be given no credence unless he has valid criticisms of Pete or his policies. Clearly, the Mayor has different perspectives.
