This book started out with promise, dealing with forging a new plan for purpose in life and traveling to Japan to be an English teacher. I laughed often as the writer has a great sense of humor and related to his language struggles as this reviewer lived in Japan for three years a long time ago and was an English teacher in Korea for a brief stint. The story, however, is geared more toward teens and young adults as it degenerates into music jams and silly conversations about the world of clubs, bars, and other not so savory places. Add in a manic temporary roomate, some fantasies about a musical miracle, and more. After a while, it just gets tedious. But if you're in for a playful, funny romp, this is a lot of fun and quite entertaining!
I must admit that, having been stationed outside of Tokyo while in the Air Force, I'm prejudiced to favor almost anything with a Japanese backdrop. That having been said, I found this book to be a light-reading delight for those limited moments that I actually get to crack open a book. It's chock full of humor primarily dealing with the conflicts between what we're used to as Americans vs what can be encountered in Japan (where the people are friendly and wonderful in their acceptance of our American/foreign cluelessness as we navigate their beautiful bustling cities and serenely peaceful countrysides). Specifically about the book, it offers real and colorful characters who are often caught up in trying to understand one another, not only in language, but on many very human levels, and usually with hilarious outcomes! The chapters are short, so it's an ideal read for someone who's looking for a light-hearted book that can be read in short increments. Even for those who never stepped into a foreign land and had to deal with a foreign culture, this book should provide abundant smiles and a good many outright laughs as you watch our protagonist stumble through his daily life in Tokyo! While we are all different (as illustrated throughout this book's storyline), I personally enjoyed "Tune In Tokyo" and hope you will as well.
I loved this book. I love that it was not about sexual conquests or about judging those he taught. He presents life abroad with a love and honey moon feeling that makes you want to be there seeing and experiencing it with him. He pulls you in with his over the top fantasies and has made me laugh out loud with the sometimes lack luster reality. Sure I would like to have read more about some things, for him to delve deeper. But this was perfect as is in my opinion. He comes out of his shell, pushes his own boundaries, and falls in love with a city. And makes me not only want to do that too, but feel like it is indeed possible.
By the time I was 1/3 of the way through this book I ordered two printed copies to give to people I know who have spent time working in Japan (but only for a month or less at a time). Tim Anderson seamlessly segues from actual events to imagined events and back. Many of us try to imagine what is going to happen in new situations that are coming up in our lives. Tim includes this in his storytelling comparing what he imagined it would be like with how events actually did unfold. Many of the fads in Japan are mysterious and crazy to people in the states. (And probably vice-versa.) I was intrigued to see a review of this book written by a US citizen working in Japan, stating that it was not possible to separate Tim's fantasies from his descriptions of actual events. This suggests to me that people from the US really do find Japanese popular culture to be mind-boggling. I didn't have any problems along these lines, but I read it safely in my own family room. I admire Tim's sense of adventure and his willingness to get out there and experience another culture. I really enjoyed his book, and so did the two people I shared it with.
I don't usually give 5 stars to "light reading", but I found "Tune in Tokyo" to be well-written, original, funny and interesting, and a more effective portrait of Japan's endearing idiosyncrasies than other books focused on it.It also brought me to consider the value of just taking a leap of faith, of doing something completely new and perhaps uncomfortable, of rebooting your life by uprooting yourself from daily existence as you know it; and it was more successful at it than the many self-improvement books I've read, despite its low-key, unassuming and colloquial writing. Made me want to run and get a job as an English teacher in Japan. Ah, if only I were a native speaker of it! ;)
I really enjoyed this book a lot. Tim shared very funny observations about life in Japan, both as a Gaijin and also as a gay man. For some readers, the gay parts might be a little off-putting. But it is who Tim is, so I was not offended at all or put off by any of it.There were many passages in the book that were seriously laugh-out-loud material. Great fun to read and I would read more by Tim.
This book was very funny, and a great first book. One of the other reviews I read only gave it two stars, but went on to say that he/she only gave one star ratings to The Davinci Code or Mark Twain. When I read that, I knew I had to give this a read. It didn't hurt that I bought it for .99 as a daily special for my Kindle. Regardless, after reading it, I felt like I learned something about life in Japan, and a little about the author, and smile when I think of some of the stories. To me, that's the sign of a book that's at least 3 stars. If the stories tied the author's time together in Japan chronologically a little better, I'd have given it 5 stars. I'd really recommend this to most people, except possibly the sort of person the author makes fun of throughout the book. They might not find it nearly as amusing.
This has to be the funniest account of teaching English in Asia that I have read. Ok, there are not a lot of them about but if there were this would still be one of the funniest. It’s also authentic (based on my experience in Japan), and has a nice balance between self-satire, social critique and goofiness. There are not many books that my dearest will tolerate me reading aloud from. This was one. We have both recommended it to our adult children. Thanks Tim!
