In 2015, I was deployed overseas with the military. It was hard being far away from my young son, who, as the days and weeks went by, eventually stopped talking to me on the phone. One day, it popped into my head to try telling him stories about "Prince Martin" in an effort to reconnect. He loved them, and that's how we maintained our loving bond during my long absence. (He even named some characters!) Prince Martin Wins His Sword is my first book based on those stories. Also check out the second book in the series, Prince Martin and the Thieves!

Hale has written an original, charming chapter book that began as a way to keep in touch with his son while Hale was away from home. The book is divided into eight short chapters that are completely written in verse. Hale does not shy away from challenging vocabulary in a book that is written for the six to ten age group.Martin is a young prince who lives in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Martin experiences a dream in which he fights a dragon with a loyal dog at his side. One of Martin’s favorite pastimes is visiting the castle armory, where all types of swords and weapons are stored. Unfortunately, the king permits his son to possess only a wooden staff and a slingshot, until the prince is able to prove that he is loyal, brave and true. Martin is unsure of how to do so, but he is determined to set forth out of the castle to the forest beyond.Chapters two through eight covers the adventures that await Martin. He will meet a farmer who warns him of wild hogs, a deer whose fawn is trapped, and a brave dog who is willing to defend the helpless with his life. Martin must face his own fears as well as bullies. Will Martin find the courage and strength to survive and prove himself worthy?The rhymes are perfect for a read aloud. Younger children might need the help of an adult to decipher some of the vocabularies. Color illustrations in each chapter enhance the adventure. This first book in a series should appeal especially to boys who love adventures, dragons, swords, and dogs. Highly recommended for elementary and middle school age children.
I have never encountered a children’s book that more enticingly or nobly depicts what it means to truly be a hero. Brandon’s writing is skillful and entertaining for all ages, and the book’s poetic verse makes it incredibly easy for kids to enjoy reading aloud or to themselves. The book’s backstory is endearing as well; I believe this book has the potential to foster connections between other parents and children, as it did for Brandon and his son. The illustrations bring the story to life in a vivid and imaginative way that has captured the minds of all of the children I’ve read this to. This book is truly a treasure!
This book is an absolute treasure, its value beyond compare, the author writes not prose but rhyme which is really quite a dare. I purchased this book after just a short look, wanting for grandsons something to read, inside is training in virtue and truth of which today there is a great need. The story does not race, but has a great pace, the illustrations are quite sublime. If you don't get this tome to train your child's dome, you should be found guilty of a terrible crime.Even though I dislike Mark Shea, you can trust what I say, not everyone can get along great. You should really get this book and read it quite often, it may improve a small child's fate.
The story of Prince Martin Wins His Sword takes off at a gallop from the very first page. Throughout this moving and action-packed tale, I was met with a story with real stakes and a boy who wants to prove to his father who he is.By far the best scene is the "hide for hide" fight, or mass melee as I would call it, between four wild hogs, a helpless fawn, Sir Ray the fearless hound and the Prince. The scene is so artfully described through the author's precise tetrameter, I felt the fur, claws, stones and teeth flying around me in the chaos of battle! The prince's pilgrimage back to the castle is an act of sacrificial love for his new brave friend and beautiful to read.And could it be that in Sir Ray we have a new Reepicheep? I eagerly await the next installment of this adventure!
Having flipped through the book to look at the illustrations, I didn't realize at first that the story was written in rhyme because the story is formatted in prose. As I began reading to my three children, it took only a moment to realize the rhyming and meter and my initial thought was, "oh boy, how many forced rhymes am I going to have to endure?" Yet the longer I read, I was amazed at how smooth the read was. The rhymes didn't feel forced at all, and the story itself really began to shine through. It is a simple story, but it works well because it teaches specific aspects of character to kids using an easy to grasp real-life example. The illustrations were a great addition to the story as well, giving the smaller kids a way to further be immersed in the story. It is a short, 20-30 minute read out loud which is perfect for a bedtime story, and I certainly look forward to further adventures of Martin and Sir Ray!
My son is four and we just started getting into chapter books. He really enjoys the Magic Tree House series, but after about three chapters he tends to lose interest. Maybe it was the cadence of the text or the way this book was broken up into chapters every three or four pages with frequent pictures, but he asked me to keep moving through each chapter until we were finished in one sitting!There are a few things parents can appreciate about the book. There are great messages about courage, loyalty, compassion, perserverance -- themes that are so great for subtly teaching your son about becoming a good man. Also, this is a vocabulary lesson for your kids (and maybe even for you -- I had to look up what a "parapet" was!). I found I was frequently telling my son what words meant.It's a great read, and I'd highly recommend. We'll look forward to reading about Prince Martin's other adventures.
My 7 year old struggles with keeping on task for homework reading and it can be a real challenge. We live in a housing complex called Camelot so you can imagine Halloween costumes and adventurous play looks like in our home. So I went on a search to find easy chapter books that flow that might keep his attention for 10 minutes and Prince Martin appeared. Not only are these amazing books, but my little guy is all about the author. Our eldest boy is in the Air Force stationed overseas and I'm a Veteran as well so it really became the icing on the cake. We have all three books and my little guy is asking for more.
