What an odd little book. I read the entire thing in one afternoon so the writing was good but then when I reached the end I felt a sense of...disappointment? frustration? confusion?First, the landlady in 1952 is described as old and gray-haired - how did she age so rapidly? She was young and in love with a new baby during WW2....yet somehow she became ancient in 10 years or less. The last time Issy sees Alec she tells him that she will be at home in the farm house that night. Does that mean that time has reversed itself and Elizabeth and the baby were killed instead of the husband, the young housekeeper and the baby? Why did Issy see a woman and a baby at the window of her country home? There are more questions but you get my drift.... I will probably pick it and read it again some day just to see if I can fill in the missing pieces.
I found this book by accident, and I wasn't familiar with Ms. Dunmore. However, the book grabbed my interest and I read it in pretty much one sitting. The reader is presented with a mesmerizing story which is fed to him\her, like a jigsaw puzzle, a piece at a time. As the story plays out and the reader gets the story together in his or her mind, its as if a light has gone on. One always realizes that something strange is going on, but the part of the landlady in this story is confusing. Its also unclear, until the end, exactly what plain of time the characters are living in. (I know dangling participle). All in all, one keeps reading page after page until the story is suddently complete. I recommend this highly. I have checked on Ms Dunmore other books, but I am afraid to read one in case it is not as good as "The Greatcoat".
The book is very good. I am disappointed though that it began with the lead character and her personality already formed without any logical build up to her way of being; as if to pull her story from the sky just for the sake of it. But, because I too am a bit 'out of the sky', and know England, I did appreciate the story, and I'm pleased that I bought it.
This was a very engrossing and emotional story, filled at times with happiness and love, and then with sadness and despair. Sometimes we wonder if there can be rents in time that allow us to see into a world of the past, or maybe the future. The energy that survives after the soul departs has to go somewhere, and perhaps intrudes into the lives of others. This love story lets us imagine what could be..a very imaginative story and good book. Could it happen...?? Who knows.
Not substantial plot; characters pretty lacking in character. Quick read but will be quickly forgotten. Should have watched t.v. Less time spent.
This story was just what I expected and yet not what I expected. The story was all right but at times I wondered if I was reading Stephen King's "Rose Madder" as the story got more and more outlandish. It didn't satisfy my quest for a good book. In fact, I ended up thinking the best thing about this book was the cover.
This was an interesting plot. I guess I really didn't think it was so much a ghost story as a time travel story. I felt the ending was somewhat abrupt; I really didn't like it. I don't think it closed up the story enough. But it was a nice read; something rather light and engaging.
The fact it was a short read was good. It held my attention but lacked much substance. The title caught my interest but the story was so so.
