Okay, how do i rate this book? I purchased it because the TRUE story of Hugh Glass is SO amazing I want to learn all I can about it. The book was purchesed with the belief it was non fiction, even the back cover of the book says "Hugh Glass is the incredible true story of one man...". Unfortunately there is a LOT of fiction here. The author, to his credit, states he had no choice but to basically fill in the blanks to make the story flow, but my opinion is that too much was made up. And the made up stuff includes the usual politically correct stuff. You know, native Americans were one with nature, they wasted nothing, they were noble, etc. etc.Hugh Glass lands in Texas and of course a pretty woman involves herself with him. Hugh Glass lands in the Pawnee camp, the pawnees execute his companion as a sacrifice to the planet Venus and next month Hugh is next! Of course a pretty maiden falls in love with him. While awaiting execution he ADMIRES the pawnees (!!). He gets out of the jam, eventually leaves the Pawnees, winds up in a fur brigade. After his grizzly mauling and abandonment he is travelling alone, the sioux capture him and who is in camp but his former indian lover who was now recatured by the Sioux! Come on....just too much. Now, I have to say as a fiction book I would give it 3 stars or maybe even 4. If you are after a good read go for it. The author does have a nice writing style and his story DOES flow. Sitting around a campfire on a mountain backpack I would like to have the author sitting with me telling stories late into the night. But if you are after more meat and potatoes about Hugh Glass the book adds little if anything. So i took an average and came up with the 2 stars. In any case I strongly request that you read Myers book on Glass first...(Pirate Pawnee Mountain Man) so you have a baseline on the Glass story. Myers book, written decades ago, is still the best source out there. I had hoped B. Bradley's book would add any info learned in the last 30 or 40 years, unfortunately it didn't but perhaps nothing more has been learned?. The Hugh Glass story should be required teaching in our schools. I mean, we read about Odysseus in Homers book, a story about a 20 year journey home. We have our own Odyseus, he lived 175 years ago and we can retrace a lot of what he did. His name is Hugh Glass. He is our own.
Bruce Bradley has a wonderful way of turning history into a story that can be enjoyed by everyone instead of being bland like it sometimes can get. I was vaguely familiar with Hugh Glass but after reading a recent article about him online, I wanted to learn more. You can tell that Bradley spent a lot of time researching this book between the details he uses, sailing, and Indian customs among other things. He definitely is a storyteller and a wonderful writer as well. Great book for any Hugh Glass fans or those wanting to learn more!
I can't remember when the last time I enjoyed history so much.Being from South Dakota, the story of Hugh Glass being attacked by a grizzly bear and crawling half-away across the state was taught in sixth grade. Well, guess what? It didn't happen like that at all. Was he mauled by a bear and left to die? Yes. But there was so much more to Hugh Glass. He was so much more than a hunter and trapper.Bruce Bradley tells the story of Hugh Glass in such a way that it kept me turning pages. I did not want to put this book down. It was exciting and had me cheering then saying, "Oh no!" Hugh Glass gave his guardian angel a workout to be sure.I imagine this book is geared toward guys but hey, I'm a woman and I loved it. I love history and I've always loved the story of Hugh Glass. I read "Lord Grizzly" when I was in junior high or high school and thought it was great. Then I read "Hugh Glass" and got a new spin on my education.I know the author did his homework and to tell this story without sounding like a know-it-all and making it a true adventure was masterfully done. This is an easy, easy five stars.
The book I bought, by Bruce Bradley, had absolutely no info on publisher or copyright. I bought it based on the average review of 4 1/2 stars and expecting more history than fiction. Wrong! As a story, it is of average readability. But the numerous, and I repeat numerous, grammatical and spelling errors drove me nuts. The vast amount of fictional bridging between a few historical events leads me to believe that this story should be offered as fiction.
Since we are going to South Dakota on vacation and will be in the area where Hugh Glass was attacked by the grizzly bear, I decided to get this book. I really expected it to be rather dry and a bit boring. It was not! The story about this larger than life man was, to me at least, an exciting and fascinating story well told by Bruce Bradley. The book begins long before the South Dakota bear incident and relates the life story of a man who lived a true life of adventure although at the beginning he was living a rather common life of a seaman. I will not ruin this adventure story for you by telling more; however, it is well worth the time to read if you like true life adventure.
Not historical but entertaining
good story, several mis-spellings in the book, surprisingly, I think the manuscript needed a closer edit before it was released.
it's the gritty version of Hugh Glasses life .
