I am beyond irritated at the moment. I’m sure this is going to be a very valuable book, but it is literally falling apart as I turn each page. The book is very thick and the first time I opened it to see if it would stay open as I used it the seam cracked and a page became loose. Now as I am sitting reading it every page I turn is loose. Yes, I can take it to UPS and they can, I hope, put a spiral back on it if the margins are wide enough, but I think a $49.00 purchase should be a bit more substantial! I have never experienced this before, very disappointed in the product, not necessarily the content what I’ve read so far has been quite helpful. I would have preferred to give no stars, but that didn’t seem quite fair!
Heard about this book on the Genealogy Guys podcast so I pretty much knew what to expect. There's a ton of stuff in here. It's not a book that you sit down and "read" really, at least I won't. I will probably use it like a resource book, I can't see anything that it doesn't cover! Good addition to my genealogy library.
I bought the 2nd edition, when I first started doing genealogy. It helped me through the rough spots, and told me what I needed to know in clear, concise terms. This 4th edition is the best all around how-to/reference for genealogy, anyone who works on genealogy should have this in their library.
The older book that I was able to find on a shelf from a church library was written more mater of fact and less fluffy. Now this is reworded for today I guess. Still trying to get through this one. Information is good if you need to start from the beginning. It has abbreviations, calendar history so you will make sure you have the correct years sited. History of the census so you know what and when things changed on the documents. Even a case study on how to match up the census that only had tally marks for the family, with your family. Great book. it has internet section in this edition too.
I haven't finished completely reading this book yet, but have found it to be well written and informative. I have been researching my family genealogy for a number of years now and while I am not as accomplished at it as I would like to be, I consider myself advanced well beyond the beginner stage. This book is one that I will keep as a reference book as I continue my research; it contains much useful information for the more experienced researcher as well as being an excellent guide for a the beginner.
I received this book yesterday having paid the full price for a new book, it is falling apart as I open it. The binding of this book is terrible. I need it for a course I am taking.
