The beginning of this book was a delight to read. It had alot of good context and makes a girl of any age think and "meditate" on God's word. Then in the middle where it talks about and quized the girl on legalism...What a disappointment. They even bring out this is controversy in the dozen page chapter. I felt this theme of controversy move on thru the next chapters with image, food, exercise, etc. The 7th chapter about Your Body was very much disconnected. What turned me off about this book the most was the feeling that talking to parents wasn't option #1. Example:"if we missed" (a question about periods) "you can always hack your mom's Facebook page-with her permission-and wtite to us. Language like this in my opinion is unsettling in a tween/teen book. Don't try to teach my kids about legalism (tattoos, hair dye, make up, clothing) and menstral cycles then direct them away from talking with parents and having their input.Read this book with your teen!

I've just started this book with my daughter last night and while I like the tone and child friendly language of this book there are a couple of things that bugged me so far. One, I felt right off the bat that they were already trying to sell me another book in the series and I haven't even gotten out of the introduction. I fully understand cross selling but it gets a bit blatant when I'm reading something out loud to my daughter and you're already talking about another book we should get to compliment this book. Two, my daughter has a great body image. Yet the very first prayer in the book required her to input and talk about the areas of her body that she feels poorly about. What???? She was struggling wrapping her brain around what was wrong with her that she didn't feel badly about herself. Why is there not a version of the prayers and answers in the book for kids who don't have poor body image? It seems odd to make kids with a positive image feel like they are the oddball.

I was hoping this would be a simple, sweet book to give to my 10 year old granddaughter about her changing body and maturing into puberty. Not so. One whole chapter on Legalism. One sentence in that chapter says "If dying your hair makes you look better and you enjoy the results, grab a box and go for it!Maybe that was meant for the "moms" reading the book but still not good in my opinion.

I bought this book for my daughter and I really love it. I love how it refers the girls to their mother or other woman in their life that they can trust to further discus topics. I love how they show that health and hygiene are more than just for beauty and that every girl is created in God's image and is beautiful. They show how the worlds view of beauty is distorted. It does touch on eating disorders. This doesn't bother me in the least, it's out there and I would rather discus issues like this with my daughter before she is tempted with such things. I want to give her a healthy start. The only thing that I didn't care for was the several plugs for the author's other books throughout the book. I can understand a blip in the beginning and the end, but this was a little much. It almost came across that you had to use their other books. You don't. All in all I would recommend this book to others and I am checking out a couple other titles from this seriesMy mom never had "the talk" with me growing up. All I learned came from friends and a friends mom. This book although not completely necessary make this a little more "fun" for my daughter and I and also helped me feel a bit more confident that I was covering all the bases. This book does not go into sex education at all.

Haven't used this with my kids yet but I read it and I am very impressed. I am quite picky on the subject and was impressed that these ladies kept really positive and focused on the beauty of womanhood while still being grounded in reality. They also avoided the all too common problem (in my opinion) of suggesting all kinds of body image issues. Granted, our society inflicts false ideals and over-sexualized images to create negative self-image for all of us. Nonetheless, for the segment of the population that (by the grace of God) has managed to shelter and foster confidence in their girls (some of whom haven't even given too much thought to the idea that their freckles could be seen as odd or that their curls are anything but a pretty little puff to tie out of the way) it can be anxiety-provoking to read books littered with girls hating their freckles, loathing their curls, and generally anxious about appearance. Somehow, the authors here managed to touch on the issues of physical appearance without conveying that angst. I'm sure there are a few things individuals might prefer to approach differently, but for me there didn't seem to be anything I can't address with simple discussion when we read the book together. I am actually shocked to find a book on this topic that I don't take greater issue with! Even Christian books are often flawed by presenting either as overly moralistic or seeming stifled or "dorky" for lack of better word. This book is conversational and totally relatable to the modern Christian (or should I say Christian living in the modern world). At the same time, it is rich and has the potential to foster a deepening of faith through extremely appropriate, well thought out scripture references that really feed the mind and soul and foster real thought and discussion. To me, this book hit just the right balance of informative, conversation-starting, and fun and actually makes me excited to read and discuss together! I think my little girl (9-planning to read soon after she is 10) will love all the cute crosswords and quizzes and "girl-talk". It's worth having a copy even if you wind up just using it for some ideas on how to start the conversation. Now thanks to these ladies I don't have to write my own book on the subject like I was thinking I might have to do! I am going to get their other book on keeping your little girl little too.Update: Read with my daughter (10.5) and we loved it! My daughter looked forward to our special time after the siblings dozed off where we could read and chat (as did I). This book made our conversations simple and fun. We are Catholic and found the book to be excellent, though like many reviewers I did feel the need to clarify or even alter several points in the book based on religious or personal/family differences. But this was ok because my daughter and I just discussed the topics. For example- the controversial point some reviewers mention about hair dye just provided a chance to discuss this not-so-simple topic (my discussion point: extreme fashions, piercings, tattoos are not entirely in line with respecting the bodies we are given and often can reflect some underlying angst or rebellion; however we can’t really judge those who do this because we don’t know their wounds or their motivation. These things can be fun and are not inherently evil but should be approached with caution and often though not necessarily reflect a deeper problem.). I did feel a need to add my 2 cents and ask my daughter her opinion in several areas, but overall, this was a very helpful resource. In sum, definitely read WITH your daughter just in case there are some nuances you want to clarify, but any individual family nuances should be fairly easy to address.

Very bible based which is what I was looking for. My daughter said she likes the quizzes and word searches. She just turned 11 and I think it's appropriate for ages 9 - 12 yrs. It doesn't go too far in-depth with questions about sex, relationships, how to handle boys making advances....I will need to find another book for the 13 - 16 year stage.
